Overview
The best earphones for running depend on your individual needs and preferences, but several options stand out. Aftershokz OpenRun Pros and Jlab Go Air Sports are both suggested as good options, while Jabra 85t and AirPods Gen 3 are good if they fit your ear well. Galaxy Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds Pro are also highly regarded. If you're looking for something that won't fall out and provide privacy, AirPods and Beats Wireless are good options. For an over-ear option, Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, Bose QuietComfort QC35 II, and Sony WH-1000XM3 are all great choices.

"Jabra Elite 65T active.. highly recommend them"

"The Jabra 85t also seems like a decent choice. They do have a semi-open design, though, which isn't good if you need to block out noise. They also seem to perform quite badly with wind noise, unlike the Samsung earbuds."
"Jabra has come out with newer headphones for runners, but the Elite Active 75t remains a strong contender on our list because you can usually find it on sale and because Jabra nailed the shape here. Credit that to the angular build that nests snugly in the outer ear canal, without giving you that tightly sealed, high-pressure “thud” with each footstrike. The sound quality is crisp, dynamic, and full—rivaling Apple’s AirPods Pro—but these Jabras will cost you less and offer about 90 more minutes of battery on a single charge. (However, the hear-through mode isn’t quite as impressive.) For dust and water protection, they’re rated IP57, meaning they should withstand a sandstorm or a monsoon. Test Editor Amanda Furrer accidentally ran them through her washing machine twice and they’re still going strong. Competing earbuds

"For Android, the galaxy buds pro 2 are pretty much widely regarded as the best in ear true wireless at a reasonable price."

"I'd say Galaxy Buds Pro or Buds 2 are the best fit for your criteria, and their sound quality is pretty much on par with the N400. The main downside is that they don't have an app for iOS. Airpods Pro could also work, though again, you don't get full functionality on Android."

"Have you tried the little adapters that you can buy on Amazon to stop them falling out? They definitely did work for me, however, I'm always bothered by the rain (in the UK) and so have switched to Aftershokz for running. I still use the airpod pros but never for running now."

Galaxy Buds and Airpods
- Great sound
- Comfortable
- Will stay in when exercising
- Smaller sized case
- Both iPhone and Android compatible
-
Around $200
- Mostly paying for better ANC and battery life, usually at the cost of ergonomics
- Don’t go over $300; will be paying for brand name, at the cost of decreased performance
- Galaxy Buds Pro or Buds 2 have good sound quality, but don’t have app for iOS
- Airpods Pro could work, but not full functionality on Android
- Jabra 85t has semi-open design, not good for blocking out noise, and performs badly with wind noise
-
Liberty 3 Pros
- Fits requirements, but large, some people find them comfortable, others don’t; not good with wind noise; stock tuning questionable
-
Sony WF-1000XM4
- Substantially better ANC and battery life, iOS compatibility; comfort and fit security can be hit or miss
-
Earfun Free Pro 2 or Soundcore Life A2 NC
- Great sound, comfortable, have wings to stay in place while exercising; EFP2 has small case, SC case could stand to be smaller
-
Galaxy Buds 2
- Great sound, light, ANC and passthrough; don’t have wingtips; can set them up for customization, EQ and upgrade firmware on Android phone; they slip out of ears running as soon as sweat; can disable touch but introduces a different issue
-
Beats fit pro
- Almost perfect but hurt ears; Powerbeats pro with ear hooks might work
"Around $200 is probably a good budget for your requirements. If you go over $200, you're mostly paying for better ANC and battery life, usually at the cost of ergonomics. Don't go over $300. If you go over $300, all you're paying for is brand name, at the cost of decreased performance by all metrics."
"Earfun Free Pro 2 or Soundcore Life A2 NC have great sound, are comfortable, have wings to stay in place while exercising. EFP2 has a really small case, SC case could stand to be much smaller, and is one of the only 'cons' for them. Both are well under your budget."
"I'd say Galaxy Buds Pro or Buds 2 are the best fit for your criteria, and their sound quality is pretty much on par with the N400. The main downside is that they don't have an app for iOS. Airpods Pro could also work, though again, you don't get full functionality on Android."

"Let me just say I love aftershokz. I’ve had a pair of one kind of another for as long as I can remember. I would never want to be without one. I run and ride solo a lot, and always with aftershokz. With that said, the audio quality is not even on the list of why I use them. As far as sound quality in comparison to every other type of headphones: Open move: D- Air: D Aeropex: D+"
"If you are looking for sound quality, you’ll be extremely disappointed when compared to other $150+ earbuds. I can’t imagine why anyone would rate the sound quality above “fair”."
"If you want to hear sounds for roughly 70% of your ride and be safe doing so, then aftershokz are for you."

"If I had to pick a single set of running headphones from Apple, I’d grab the Beats Fit Pro. They take everything we love in the AirPods 3 and Beats Studio Buds, but cram it all into a tiny set of buds with an ear wing to help them stay put. No matter how sweaty I get, these buds don’t budge, and they don’t ache when you get up to an hour or 90 minutes of running. Like the Studio Buds, you still get the delightful tactile buttons that require just a light press to play/pause, two presses to skip, three to go back, and a long press to activate active noise cancellation and transparency modes or Siri. It’s easy to use and there’s no fumbling for small buttons. The coolest feature, however, is one you might have never considered—spatial audio. When you turn your head, the audio rotates so it sounds like the band is in the same spot, just as the sound would change when you swivel your head at a real concert. It’s trippy, at first, so don’t actually trip while you’re running—you get used to the feature quickly. But, it’s not just neat audio effects at play here, as the sound is remarkable for small headphones."
